How to Achieve Website Success Beyond Your Wildest Dreams, Even if You Have Little or No Budget. A True Story

February, 2012 by

They were ready to throw in the towel.

Take their website offline.

In over two years, their website hadn’t done anything but sit there. Like a bump on a log.

They’d paid two different website designers, exhausted their budget on advertising and still – nothing.

They were ready to pull the plug when someone they trusted said “Don’t you dare quit. Call Linda.”

One year after calling, they’d grown their business – not by double or even triple – but by over 18x the volume. From death’s door to 700,000 pounds of coffee per year.

I know! Crazy, right?

first things first – we redesigned the website

Goodbye blah. Hello atmosphere! Yay, aesthetics.
We created a mailing list. And a clever selling system.

At first sales trickled in. Then we mailed our brand spankin’ new list. And did thousands in sales. In 48 hours!

Then they were featured in a Cuisine magazine. Sales picked up even more. Could it get better?

OH MY GOSH, ORDERS ARE FLOODING IN!

And then – they were featured in Forbes. Forbes!

50 Best Websites in America!

The phone was ringing. Journalists were calling. The media was calling them the “champagne” of coffee.

They called me, laughing and crying with joy, telling me orders were flooding in so fast they couldn’t keep up.

Their shopping cart was going crazy. They’d called everyone they knew to help pack orders.

SEVEN YEARS TO OVERNIGHT SUCCESS

They’d struggled for 5 long years, selling locally only, before they even got a website.

Scratching out a living, wondering if they’d ever catch the brass ring.

Finally, they went online.

But the first website failed. They hired another designer. The second website failed, too.

Seven years slogging it out. And then? Success. At last!

It is possible. Against all odds and beyond your wildest dreams. Even when you’re a small business with a small budget.

Because, you see, it’s not about size. Or budget. Not anymore.

The Internet opened doors to small business that were never open before. The great equalizer. Champion of the little guy. Never before could a small business reach so many for so little.

Why Most Small Business Websites Fail

Know why they were failing?

Like most small businesses, they knew their business. Inside out and backwards.

What they didn’t know was my business. Marketing!

  • They didn’t know people seldom buy on the first visit.

  • Didn’t know how to capture leads.
  • Or convert them.
  • Didn’t have a follow up system.
  • Or sales funnel.

They weren’t even speaking in the customer’s language.

That’s a biggie. Most small business owners struggle to speak the customer’s language. It’s hard to read the label from inside the bottle.

For example? People don’t want to be bombarded with sales material. We love buying, but we hate feeling like we’re being “sold.”

So what’s the trick?

why websites fail

Website Design is not a marketing strategy

Building a website is not a marketing strategy. A website is a tool with which to implement a marketing strategy.

The best web designer in the world can’t integrate a kick butt marketing plan into the design of your site if you don’t have a kick butt marketing plan in the first place.

Not all designers know marketing. Most designers learn visual arts. Layout. And that’s important because websites that look unprofessional make people question your credibility. Which means lost business.

But, pretty alone doesn’t ring the cash register. A pretty website that doesn’t say what your customer needs to hear is no more effective than an attractive person who can’t string a sentence together. Know what I’m saying?

So, if you don’t know marketing… and your designer doesn’t know marketing…

And that’s why I was able to make a difference. Because we didn’t just re-design their site. We created a marketing strategy. One step at a time. On the phone. In email. We even used chat. Step by step, we cobbled together a strategy. And implemented it.
