Pagerank is Over Rated
Because a picture is worth a thousand words…
1.8 million competing sites and the #1 site has a PageRank of 3?

Again… top slot goes to a site with PageRank of only 3…

Over 32 MILLION competitors and a PR4 site scoops spot #2?

How can that be?
Page rank is a measure of the importance of your site on the Internet as a whole.
How you rank, on the other hand, measures your site vs. competing sites.
So… the “little pampered pets” site might only have a web-wide value of 3 out of 10. (ie; page rank) But compared to other pampered pets sites…? Tops in their category.
PageRank does factor in to how you rank. But it’s “a” factor, not “the” factor.
PageRank is one of hundreds of variables Google looks at when indexing your site.
Dupe content will get your pages dumped demoted way faster than low PageRank will.
The moral of the story is this; don’t lose brain cells over page rank.
Instead, put them to work figuring out how to stand out in your market category.

Linda,
This is very helpful to a newbie like me who is still trying to understand all of this ranking stuff. A question which comes to mind for me is how a post which is edited after it is originally published is viewed. In a couple of instances I have edited a post changing its title to include keywords and then modified the body to also include the keywords in a couple of places. Will this help, hinder or have little effect? Thanks
Ken
Hey Ken…. modifying a post can help the next time you’re spidered. Just be sure you have a google site map. What I’d also do is when you modify a post to improve the title or include the keywords in a couple of places, go submit it to MSN. It will start a little flurry of re-indexing that post. Or use it as your linkback when you post to another blog (ie; comment) That way, the spiders “re” find that same post, but with the changes. Don’t manually submit to Google with their submit url, though, let them refind it naturally. (MSN submission helps with that) Glad you enjoyed this! : )
